A warehouse full of combustible stock poses a much faster-spreading fire risk than an office — so 'extra/high hazard' occupancies require an extinguisher roughly every 1,000 sqft, three times denser coverage than the 3,000 sqft allowed for a low-risk office or home.
Fire codes also cap the maximum travel distance to the nearest extinguisher (commonly 75ft for light/ordinary hazard) — in an oddly-shaped floor plan, you may need more extinguishers than the area calculation alone suggests, just to keep every point within that distance.
